This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts and techniques of digital photography. It combines basic photography principles of composition and lighting with digital concepts such as exposure evaluation, file formats and image manipulations. This is a perfect course for anyone who wants to improve their photographic skills to capture better photographs.
Course Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand how digital cameras work and the appropriate application of digital capture
- Understand resolution, image compression and file formats
- Select the appropriate f-stop, shutter speed, exposure mode, lens and focal length
- Understand and apply lighting concepts such external flashes and natural light
- Understand and apply the elements of proper composition
This course builds on the fundamentals learned in DPH100 Digital Photography Level 1. Students will gain and apply expanded knowledge of techniques and creative process to develop their visual expression in the art of digital photography. Image manipulation and layout is introduced as a fundamental aspect of a digital workflow. Students will also be exposed to various options for image transfer from camera to computer and importing them into various software programs. This course will also cover digital printing techniques, color management, and introduce students to the various industries in photography.
Students in this program will learn the basics of design, typography, and colour theory, and hone their skills in creative problem solving to help them learn how to meet the needs of clients quickly, creatively and economically. Students will be trained to design with the following software tools, Adobe Photoshop, Quark Xpress, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Illustrator.
Emphasis is placed on learning the skills and techniques of both computer graphics and traditional design and production tools, such as the drawing board and drawing instruments. Advanced training includes the execution of assignments encountered by professionals in the field. Students graduate with the training and portfolio required for an entry-level position in visual communications.

Interior designers give form to the spaces in which we spend our lives. An interior designer is, by definition a person who identifies, researches and solves problems pertaining to the function and quality of interiors. Their work includes programming, design analysis, as well as specifying and designing all aspects of interior spaces. Using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building codes, materials, lighting and furnishings, interior designers prepare drawings and documents in order to protect the heath, safety and welfare of the public.
Interior Design is both an art and a science. Its purpose is to enhance quality of life and facilitate human activity. Graduates of the AIV Interior Design Bachelor Program will be eligible to write the NCIDQ http://www.ncidq.org exam upon completion of the required work experience.
In the Home Furnishings Merchandising program, students fulfill their creative vision by applying problem-solving skills and design fundamentals to the business, marketing, and sales of home fashions. Curriculum explores the various categories of home furnishings, as well as the materials used in their construction and manufacture, and the evolution and history of furniture. Creative comprehension of textiles, colour theory and the fundamentals of design complements studies in consumer behaviour, inventory management, visual merchandising, retailing, retail buying, and trends and forecasting. Likewise, students study various aspects of furniture design including human dimensions, materials and fabrications.
Senior students apply their skills and knowledge of the business side of the home furnishings industries through the planning and organization of a special display project. This process lets them explore the various components and practices utilized in the merchandising and sale of products through the completion of a project plan that includes these components. Skills learned throughout the program are applied to the assembly of a formal portfolios are that represents the students’ skills and interest developed throughout the program.
In the Advanced Graphic Design program, you'll build upon your knowledge of design and fine-tune your ability to use typography, layout, and color theory to create eye-catching designs. Industry-related software is utilized to help you gain experience as you create designs such as logos, posters, packaging, and Web sites. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as advertising designer, computer artist, freelance artist, graphic designer, or layout artist.
The Interior Design & Foundation for Design program teaches students to visualize a three-dimensional understanding of space, form, and function. Coursework focuses on drawing, drafting, color, design, and the fundamentals of space planning and perspective. Real-world experience is gained through class and community projects. Through these projects, students study detailing, systems, construction, and materials - as well as market realities. Graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment such as draftsperson, facilities planner, interior designer/decorator, or space planner.
